HAMMER: Celebrating One Year of AI-Powered Innovation in Space

ne year ago, Open Cosmos launched HAMMER, the world’s first AI-powered nano-satellite, marking a transformative moment in Earth observation. Today, we celebrate its ongoing success and the groundbreaking advancements it has delivered in real-time insights from space.

HAMMER was designed to push the boundaries of satellite technology, and over the past year, it has exceeded expectations by revolutionising data collection, processing, and transmission. As the first nano-satellite capable of generating AI-driven inferences onboard and transmitting actionable insights to the ground via inter-satellite links in near real-time, HAMMER has redefined the speed and efficiency of Earth observation. Within just 24 hours after launch, it acquired and downloaded its first hyperspectral image—an unprecedented achievement that showcases its rapid data processing capabilities.

Reflecting on the satellite’s impact, Oriol Aragon, Senior Mission Manager for HAMMER, highlights its transformative role: “HAMMER has redefined what is possible with AI-powered Earth observation. Beyond its technological breakthroughs, HAMMER has made significant contributions to maritime security by detecting and analysing hundreds of vessels, including "dark ships" operating without active transponders. By delivering real-time intelligence, it enhances monitoring efforts and helps combat illegal activities at sea. The satellite has also played a critical role in disaster response and environmental monitoring, using NASA JPL’s AI models to track floods and wildfires. By providing immediate insights, HAMMER enables authorities to respond faster and more effectively to natural disasters.

A key innovation brought by HAMMER is Dynamic Targeting, an advanced technique that will enable real-time decision-making to optimise Earth observation. This allows for cloud avoidance, wildfire tracking, and anomaly detection, significantly improving the responsiveness and accuracy of satellite monitoring.

As HAMMER continues to operate, it paves the way for a future where AI-powered satellites provide smarter, more actionable data from space.
