El primer satèl·lit de les Illes Balears

El principal objectiu del satèl·lit serà oferir dades sobre l’arxipèlag balear que permetin entendre i mitigar els efectes derivats del canvi climàtic en el benestar de la població, la sostenibilitat mediambiental i activitats econòmiques estratègiques per a les illes com el turisme. A més, el projecte busca donar suport a la transició del sectors tractors de l’economia balear cap a models cada cop més sostenibles i millorar la gestió de la saturació turística, que afecta diverses destinacions de les Illes Balears.

Open Cosmos serà l'encarregada de fabricar i operar el satèl·lit, co-finançat amb fons europeus del Govern de les Illes Balears. Wireless DNA S.L., la Universitat de les Illes Balears i Garden Hotels, amb el suport de la Federació Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca (FEHM), desenvoluparan un seguit d’aplicacions i casos d'ús per a donar solució als reptes climàtics que afecten no només la ciutadania sinó també activitats econòmiques claus per a les illes, com el turisme.

Les imatges i les dades obtingudes pel satèl·lit seran fonamentals per a la gestió del territori i de les infraestructures crítiques a les Illes Balears. Aquestes dades també contribuiran a millorar la gestió d'emergències i catàstrofes naturals com puguin ser els incendis o les inundacions que malauradament són cada cop més freqüents a la conca mediterrània.

El satèl·lit proporcionarà a administracions, centres de recerca i empreses accés a informació clau, cosa que facilitarà una presa de decisions més eficient i estratègica en àrees com el canvi climàtic, la gestió del territori i la sostenibilitat turística. Aquest enfocament permetrà reforçar la resiliència de les Illes Balears davant els desafiaments del canvi climàtic, posicionant les Illes com a líders en innovació i sostenibilitat a nivell internacional.

The first satellite of the Balearic Islands

Open Cosmos will manufacture the first Balearic satellite to mitigate the impact of climate change on tourism.

The main objective of the satellite will be to offer high resolution data that will allow research into new technologies and solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change in the tourism sector. Furthermore, the project seeks to support the transition of the sector towards a more sustainable model and to study the impact of initiatives to manage tourist saturation, which affects several destinations in the Balearic Islands.

Open Cosmos will manufacture this satellite, in collaboration with the Government of the Balearic Islands, Wireless DNA S.L., the University of the Balearic Islands and Garden Hotels, with the support of the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca (FEHM). The initiative also has the support of renowned hotel chains such as Barceló Hotel Grup, Iberostar Group, Hyatt Inclusive Collection Europe, BQ Hotels, Grupotel Hotels & Resorts, Protur Hotels and Universal Beach Hotels.

The images and data obtained by the satellite will be essential for territorial management and critical infrastructure in the Balearic Islands. This data will also contribute to improving the management of emergencies and natural disasters, and to the development of new technologies and services that can benefit both the public and private sectors.

The satellite will provide administrations, research centers and companies with access to key information, which will facilitate more efficient and strategic decision-making in areas such as climate change, land management and tourism sustainability. This approach will strengthen the resilience of the Balearic Islands to the challenges of climate change, positioning the Islands as leaders in innovation and sustainability at an international level.
