Open Cosmos selected to build nanosatellite platform and provide full end-to-end mission for in-orbit demonstration of Lacuna Space IoT Everywhere service
Harwell, 16 January 2019. Today, Lacuna Space signed a contract with Open Cosmos for building, launching and operating its innovative Internet-of-Things (‘IoT’) connectivity-via-satellite payload demonstrator.
Lacuna Space Ltd plans to provide an ultra-low-cost tracking and detection service for short data messages that is ubiquitous. While its first demonstration mission is scheduled for launch soon, Lacuna Space selected Open Cosmos to provide its full end-to-end space mission service for a subsequent technology demonstration, including a dedicated beeSat 3U bus, launch, ground segment, and operations. Lacuna will fly additional follow-on demonstration missions after mid-2019 prior to rolling-out its full IoT constellation.
Lacuna Space CEO Rob Spurrett: “We are thrilled to have Open Cosmos as a partner, as we work towards demonstrating our low-cost, simple and reliable IoT service for global connections to sensors and mobile equipment. We needed a partner that could deliver a standard mission in a fast and affordable manner, and that’s what Open Cosmos is about. These payloads will perform a validation of service in advance of the deployment of a full operational scale constellation, which in its first phase is expected to comprise of 24 satellites.”
Open Cosmos CEO Rafael Jordá Siquier: “The Lacuna Space payload will greatly benefit from Open Cosmos’ full end to end space mission. Removing the pain of building, launching and operating nanosatellites in order to focus on its unique payload design and its customers is what Lacuna was after, and that’s really the core of our value proposition. Combining our powerful beeApp mission design and satellite operation software, beeKit payload qualification hardware, and standard beeSat 3U bus, will allow this mission to be launched to orbit in under 10 months.”
The launch of the mission is planned for end October 2019.
