Open Cosmos named as a leading global innovator in 2018 Disrupt 100

20 June 2018. Judged by leading innovation experts, Open Cosmos has been selected as one of the top 100 ventures, number 3 on the list, with the potential to disrupt markets globally. Disrupt 100 is an index compiled by Tällt Ventures, a global data intelligence and innovation company, celebrating the ventures with the most potential to influence, change or create new global markets.

Included alongside a notable list, Open Cosmos has been recognised as a venture with the potential to change the world we live in.

Open Cosmos provides simple and affordable small satellite missions to help solve the world’s biggest challenges. It enables organizations from across a wide range of industries to use space technologies as a tool. Open Cosmos removes space access barriers by simplifying space technology, offering a one-stop-shop to orbit, reducing time and cost. They offer constellation services, in-orbit demonstration services, payload development and qualification services.

Each company featured is judged by a panel of industry experts, including names from Uber, Google, Microsoft Ventures and Startupbootcamp, against tough criteria including the talent of the founding team, the company’s traction to date, its market potential and the impact it is likely to have on society.

Rafael Jorda Siquier, CEO and Founder, Open Cosmos said:

“At Open Cosmos, we believe space technology can solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. We are working hard to disrupt the way the space industry works and to democratise this technology so people can truly engage in having a global impact. It is heartwarming to be recognised for all the hard work we are conducting, coming in at 3rd on the Disrupt 100 list!”

Disrupt 100’s Founder, Matt Connolly, explains “This is now our 3rd year celebrating disruptive global innovation – and this year’s cohort are a truly exciting bunch. Each company featured is revolutionising their particular industry (as well as the world we live in) and we’re looking forward to seeing how they grow and effect change in the coming years.”

Open Cosmos is led by its founder Rafael Jorda Siquier, a Spanish entrepreneur who 10 years ago had the idea to make space more accessible. Three years ago, Open Cosmos was created at Entrepreneur First and is now set up in the UK at the Harwell Space Cluster, at the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre. It has now grown to 28 employees and has a clean room at Harwell to build the satellites. Open Cosmos recently raised US$7 million in a Series A round of funding.

Based at the Harwell Space Cluster in Oxfordshire, Open Cosmos provides end-to-end mission services enabling its clients to focus on in-orbit data. This one-stop-shop to orbit allows companies to have dedicated small satellite missions for remote sensing payloads, IoT/telecommunication services, scientific research, or space technology in-orbit demonstrations. Open Cosmos manufactures its satellites in-house, procures launch services from partners, and operates “qbee” small satellite fleets using its own satellite operations system, whilst leveraging existing ground segment infrastructure.
