A space for creativity in science: Our Communications intern shares her Open Cosmos experience
I came across Open Cosmos by accident while hunting for internships in publishing or media. There was an opening for a Marketing and Communications Internship which I had all the skills for but lacked the formal qualifications. I study creative writing at the University of Oxford, involving myself heavily in student journalism, and I do editorial/layout for a graduate science magazine. I had even begun writing a Young Adult novel about space as part of my coursework. With my combined experience I knew the role was perfect for me so I took a chance and applied anyway.
Now, I couldn’t imagine a better place to be in the early stages of my career. My dream is to write TV sitcoms and novels, and I am developing a parallel career in science communications to support that journey. The Open Cosmos internship allows me the unique opportunity to utilise all my talents, creating meaningful work that has brought a huge sense of balance to my professional and personal lives.
The space industry makes for a truly inspired workplace. It takes bold, imaginative people to create revolutionary technologies and push the limits of what is possible. Being surrounded by people who are driven by a shared passion is exactly the kind of environment that motivates me both in and out of the office.

One of my favourite things about working for Open Cosmos is the amount of trust and autonomy I have in the projects I’m assigned. At a start-up, everyone on the team is responsible for the growth and success of the company regardless of seniority. It has been really empowering knowing my efforts matter and seeing that my work makes a difference.
